Amarin Thai Restaurant

Recently I had dinner with some Vietnamese friends in Amarin Thai restaurant, which can be found in Mid Valley Megamall.

I think this is a very authentic Thai restaurant. My mum loves the food.

The ice blended coconut drink is refreshing and all the starters are great. Prices are reasonable.

Prawn Mee in Singapore

I was introduced to Singapore's version of prawn mee by my colleagues in Johor Bahru.

Singaporean prawn mee is fried mee but wet. It doesn't taste at all like what I'm used to because the Malaysian version always comes in soup.

I'd always prefer the Penang prawn mee, or mee yoke!

Office Politics

Last week, I was busy traveling and didn't notice a few emails that came into my BlackBerry. By the time I read them and called my friend, it was late in the evening and I immediately sensed she was distressed.

Her colleague had been treating her like a sister, but when she resigned, a nasty email was dropped blaming my friend for her job lost while congratulating her on her new employment soon taking over her position. My friend and the ex-associate were from different departments. Even worse, the email was circulated to the top management. She was lost and speechless not knowing what to do next!

I just advised her "not to do anything".

I empathize with her situation because I have also experienced backstabbing by colleagues or superiors in the past, without knowing what was going on. There are many nasty people out there!

This is a form of office politics. The best way to play office politics is not to play politics.

The truth will always prevail.

Have you encountered office politics before? What can we do to avoid it?

Healing Anger - Friends or enemies?

I took this picture and saw the sunshine struggling to penetrate the clouds. It prompted me to share this on my blog and Facebook.

Recently, I was invited for a buka puasa event with some old friends. I found out that some of them didn't want to speak to each other anymore. What surprised me most was the badmouthing and refusal to mend the relationship.

Best friends become enemies due to misunderstandings, and the stubborn belief that they are always right.

If we do not address these issues, we will never move on in life. Nothing will always remain the "best" in your circumstances.

The philosophy of impermanence teaches us to let go of ourselves. Why let anger and misconception cloud our mind?

This holy month of Ramadan is a good time to mend relationships. Regardless of what religion we follow, we need to heal anger.

I strongly recommend this book, Healing Anger: The Power of Patience from a Buddhist Perspective by H.H. the Dalai Lama (translated by Thupten Jinpa) for those who are in a position where they feel angry and unforgiving. Below is the synopsis:

"Buddhist traditions unanimously state that compassion and love are the foundation of all paths of practice. To cultivate the potential for compassion and love inherent within us, it is crucial to counteract their opposing forces of anger and hatred. The Dalai Lama shows how patience and tolerance overcome the obstacles of anger and hatred. His Holiness presents the practice of the Six Perfections, the central role of bodhichitta, the twelve links of dependent origination, and offers a clear road map for the practitioner to achieve the goal of liberation. The techniques and methods are relevant for everyone—the Dalai Lama shows the power that patience and tolerance have to heal anger and to generate peace in the world."

Red Tomato Interview

I did an interview with Caren Wong from Red Tomato, a weekly Chinese newspaper, in Cantonese a few weeks ago. I am their cover story this week! Read the article here.

Steamboat in Puchong

Harbour Restaurant is one of the steamboat restaurants in Bandar Puteri Puchong (42, Ground Floor, Jalan Puteri 2/4, Bandar Puteri).

Their food items and soup are great. A little pricey but worth it.

Harbour Restaurant's phone number is on the sign

Great Birthday Ribs

My friends had a birthday celebration at Ribs in the Oasis Business Centre, Bandar Utama. We actually want to dine somewhere else but the restaurant had closed down.

I haven't been here for years, but the food is still great! After talking to some of the waitresses, I learnt that all the chefs are Filipinos.

The salad is a simple green salad with strips of lamb.

My friends tried the grilled baby back pork ribs: the smokey bbq (first picture) and honey mustard (above).

I went for the grilled belly pork ribs with Tuscan flavour.

We had a great time!

For Single Malt Whiskey Drinkers

For single malt whiskey drinkers, this is a Japanese brand that, in my opinion, beats a lot of scotches.

I was introduced to this whiskey in Narita Airport many years back. A few months ago in Labuan, I told the owner of the largest chain of duty free shops in Labuan to bring Yamazaki into his collection. You would've believe how many bottles we drank that night!

Two nights ago, I bought the very last bottle (18 years), but I'm expecting two more bottles (12 years) to arrive!

Both Suntory Yamazaki 12- and 18-year old single malts are aged in casks of three different kinds of oaks: American, Spanish and Japanese. This gives the whiskey its unique quality as each drink has a distinct taste.

Here's more information (taken from the website):

YAMAZAKI Single Malt 12-Year Old Whisky
A medium-bodied whisky with the aromas of dried fruits and honey. It has a delicate, mellow taste with a lingering, woody, dry finish.

YAMAZAKI Single Malt 18-Year Old Whisky
A full-bodied whisky with spicy cherry-like tones. The toffee aromatics of this copper-gold colored whisky offer a pleasant, long, dry finish.

Fish Head Noodle ... Fried

There's this steamboat restaurant, BB Ho in Bandar Puteri Puchong that is not only famous for its steamboat, but also its fried fish head noodles and fried crab noodles.

Fish head noodles are normally served in a bowl of soup, so many of my friends have never tried the fried version. They should, as it's really good!

Obama's Watch

Before Barack Obama became the President of the United States, no one has even heard of the Jorg Gray brand that sells watches ranging from US$200-$300.

Lately, the watchmakers issued the JG6500 Commemorative Edition, which sells like hot cakes for the price of $325.

Letterman Marketing has brought in the watches to Malaysia, which are going for RM1,080-RM1,380. Not too expensive.

Obama's Jorg Gray watch was a gift from one of his secret service agents when he was still a senator. Since his inauguration, it has gone on to receive wide media attention.
A few nights ago on a talk show, Obama wore a large-sized watch which got people tweeting and speculation that it was an Omega or even a Rolex. My guess would be it wasn't a Rolex, as most watches for men by Rolex have a metal bracelet, while the one he wore had a dark leather strap.

Unless the President has recently gone shopping and bought an Omega, it's likely to have been his trusty Tag Heuer or Jorg Gray.

The Best Char Siew in PJ

Restoran Meng Kee Char Siew, in my opinion, serves the best char siew in Shah Alam and Petaling Jaya.

The restaurant is located in Glenmarie, near Shah Alam. From 11am to 3pm everyday, you will see the owner slicing char siew nonstop, and slabs of this barbequed pork have to be replenished every few minutes. Aside from char siew, they also serve chicken and vegetable dishes.

Those who know the famous char siew in Tengkat Tong Shin would be interested to know that Restoran Meng Kee Char Siew is their first branch in Shah Alam. The one in Tengkat Tong Shin has already moved out though, and I've yet to explore its new location.

Ramadan At Your Doorstep

One of the perks of working for a hotel group is being in touch with the various food and beverage promotions. Dining out is, as you can probably guess, one of my interests!

The month of Ramadan has begun, and there are plenty of buka puasa buffets going on in Dorsett hotels. Let me share some of promotions we have in Kuala Lumpur with you.

Grand Dorsett Subang has buffets at Terazza Brasserie and Miyako Japanese restaurant. All diners get 40% discount until this Sunday! There is also a Ramadan set menu at The Emperor Chinese restaurant.

Dorsett Regency KL has celebrity chef Jaafar Onn entertaining diners at Checkers Cafe. And there's 50% discount today. Full price is RM69.90++, so it's only RM34.45 for a feast of nostalgic Malay dishes today!

Maytower Hotel & Serviced Residences's La Maison restaurant has a buka puasa buffet for RM59.90++. Today is also the last day for their 50% discount!

Have a great Ramadan feast!

Entry Fees for the US will be Collected from Tourists in September

Article reproduced from http://www.eturbonews.com/17737/entry-fees-us-will-be-collected-tourists-september

The Department of Homeland Security announced Friday that it will begin collecting fees on travellers from Visa Waiver countries beginning Sept. 8, 2010. Travellers will be charged a $14 fee when applying for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). A portion of the fee will go toward funding the Corporation for Travel Promotion, created by the 2009 Travel Promotion Act. “This is an important milestone in the implementation of the Travel Promotion Act,” Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said. “Creating a tourism promotion program to encourage international visitors to vacation in America will help spur economic growth and create more jobs.”

Travel and tourism is the top services export for the United States, totaling $120 billion and supporting more than one million American jobs. Overseas visitors spend an average of $4,000 per person per trip in the United States.

Oxford Economics estimates the travel promotion program under the Travel Promotion Act will generate $4 billion in new visitor spending and 40,000 new jobs. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the program will reduce the federal budget deficit by $425 million in the next 10 years.

President Obama signed the Travel Promotion Act of 2009 (TPA) into law earlier this year, putting into place a new public - private partnership between the U.S. government and the nation’s travel and tourism industry. Under the TPA, Commerce Secretary Locke will appoint the board of directors for the Corporation for Travel Promotion. Commerce will work closely with the board to ensure the Corporation achieves its goals.

Weekends Off For Maids ... To Do What?

Not so long ago, the Malaysian government said they were considering the Indonesian embassy's request for Indonesian maids to have weekends off from work.

What they didn't consider was where maids could go.

Can you imagine the maids loitering or camping at the KLCC park, or flooding the shopping complexes further?

In Hong Kong, I was observing Causeway Bay, an upmarket area and shopping district, where the Hong Kong government allowed maids to camp around and under the bridges, Victoria Park, and other designated areas. Cleaners were on standby in the evening to clear all the rubbish before nighttime.

It is a social issue for the Malaysian government to consider, unless they only want to resolve matters as and when they arise.

Go Green Art

I was walking down the street in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong, and saw a group of environmentalists putting up sculptures made of plastic water bottles.

Again, I'm not an art enthusiast but how the sculptures were crafted looked really interesting. What a great way to display art and create awareness of being environmentally friendly.

'Going green' is not just an initiative that should be carried out by corporations, nor is it limited to recycling and planting trees. I admire how it has been used for art, and so imaginatively too!

Real Vegetable Buns

We hardly see vegetable buns in dim sum restaurants in Malaysia. Or the local version contains mushrooms and turnip, but no greens.

Many years ago, a friend introduced me to vegetable buns in an old dim sum restaurant in Shanghai. I really loved it, which led me to a hunt for vegetable buns in Kuala Lumpur.

Today, authentic vegetable buns can be found in two restaurants: i-Dragon (picture above) and Ding Tai Fung (picture below).

I enjoy vegetable buns at both restaurants, but prefer the Ding Tai Fung ones!

Ding Tai Fung KL vs HK

In Hong Kong, I managed pay a visit to Ding Tai Fung, the restaurant that's also popular in Kuala Lumpur.

As expected, there's a better variety of dishes here compared to what we get in Malaysia. And the dishes are tastier in Hong Kong too! The jung is excellent and another must-try is the siew lung pao with crab roe!

Nasi Lemak Tanglin

I've not been to Nasi Lemak Tanglin for many years until this morning.

A few years ago, the stall was under two big trees. Today, it has been moved to a food court opposite the Tanglin Hospital.

The crowd hasn't changed! I'm guessing that it's because the nasi lemak, especially the sotong, is still the best in town!

The Secret Behind Good Meetings

In our working life, we attend or organize meetings after meetings.

However, if it is not an effective meeting, a lot of time is wasted.

A lot of people come to a meeting to gather information and provide general explanations
but not solutions. The weaker ones would provide excuses for their shortcomings.

Lately I have been attending several very important meetings, but a few sessions only involved digesting information instead of resolving matters.

How can we work more efficiently if we do not even prepare themselves for meetings, where brainstorming, analysis and decisions take place?

Here are some of my ideas on how to have more effective meetings:

1. Structure your meeting. Do not allow the meeting to be out of control.
2. Have smaller groups to brainstorm with each other before the big meeting. This will eliminate a lot of misunderstanding and unnecessary arguments.
3. Meetings should not be a report session. Instead meetings should be where we make decisions or determining the business direction.
4. The objective of the meeting must be clear. Ask yourself: what is the outcome of this meeting? If you are unsure, then is it not necessary to organize the meeting because you are not ready for it.
5. Identify the 'influencer' of the meeting. Is this leader or person on the wavelength as you? If not, it is crucial to have a prior meeting with this person in order for him/her to support your idea or cause.
6. Do not allow outside topics to affect your current agendas.
7. Good planning always costs less than good reacting!

In Between Imagination & Reality

While I was in Hong Kong, I came across an art exhibition in Times Square, Causeway Bay.

I don't really understand art, but the sculptures were interesting. I'll leave it to your imagination to figure them out!

HR Matters Article Out

My interview with HR Matters is out, where I spoke about Knowledge Management. I'm impressed with how they went to length to define KM:
"An established discipline(1) since 1991, knowledge management is recognition that data is not the same as knowledge and likewise, that knowledge does not equal wisdom. Knowledge management is about a having a structured approach and methodology for the capture of data, how we make sense of it, the manner in which we distill key insights and how we ensure that the insights gained can be shared across the enterprise in the manner intended."
You can buy a copy of HR Matters, or read the article here.

My objective, for Dorsett International, is to have satisfied customers (our guests) and happy associates, which I believe the implementation of KM will achieve!

My interview on Talent Management with Roshan Thiran on The Leaderonomics Show is out!
